Poaching, coupled with the continuing high demand for ivory products (particularly from Chinese consumers), is reducing elephant populations in many parts of Africa.

By instituting a World Elephant Day we have an additional opportunity to reflect on the measures that need to be put in place to stop the massacre and ensure a safe and sustainable habitat for African and Asian elephants.
Examples to follow

Some countries (including the USA) have announced embargoes on ivory imports. Let us welcome these initiatives which, even if they do not solve the whole problem, have the merit of reaching the culprits where they are most sensitive, that is to say the portfolio ...
