Every year, September 8, we celebrate International Literacy Day. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy among citizens, communities and associations. Today, nearly one in seven people is illiterate, and about 860 million are illiterate, 500 million are women.A goal of literacy for allLiteracy is a cause for celebration for humanity that has made dramatic advances in the field, the world has indeed now close to four billion literate.However, the goal of literacy for all - children, youth and adults - has still not been reached, and remains a moving target. The combination of ambitious goals, insufficient and parallel efforts, inadequate resources and strategies and the permanent underestimation of the magnitude and complexity of the task, probably explain this situation.By its resolution A / RES / 56/116, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the ten-year period beginning 1 January 2003 "United Nations Literacy Decade". This deadline has passed, we must realize that there is still a lot of work to do and pay homage to the many associations working in the field.A site visit: www.unesco.org
